The date 1716 is divided on either side of the cross, with the mint-master initials H and S placed in the lower field flanking the crowned numeral. John William ruled Saxe-Eisenach for less than a decade before the duchy reverted to Saxe-Weimar upon his death in 1729 without a male heir, ending the Eisenach line entirely. These tiny silver pieces were struck during a period when fractional coinage in the Ernestine duchies was notoriously inconsistent — multiple mints operating under loosely coordinated standards produced issues of wildly varying fineness, and 3 Pfennig pieces frequently fell below their nominal silver content.
