Reuss-Schleiz was one of the smallest of the Thuringian principalities, and Henry LXII — the Roman numeral reflecting the Reuss family's eccentric tradition of numbering all male heirs "Heinrich" sequentially across all branches since the 13th century — ruled a territory of roughly 50,000 souls. This 1850 issue came just two years after the revolutions of 1848 forced numerous German princes to grant constitutions, including in the Reuss lands. The principality was absorbed into the North German Confederation in 1867 and ceased independent coinage shortly after.
