Ferdinand of Bavaria held the bishopric of Münster as part of a broader Wittelsbach accumulation of ecclesiastical offices — he simultaneously held Cologne, Liège, Hildesheim, and Paderborn. This small silver issue falls squarely within the Thirty Years' War, when Westphalian territories were among the most fought-over in the Empire. The peace negotiations that ended the conflict were conducted in Münster itself, concluding in 1648, just two years after this type ceased production.
