| Additional information |
Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach occupies an outsized place in German cultural history relative to its political weight — Goethe spent most of his adult life at the Weimar court, and Charles Frederick ruled the duchy from 1828 until his death in 1853. The small copper pfennig denominations of this period were minted at Weimar under the conventions of the Dresden Coinage Treaty of 1838, which harmonized weights and values across the Saxon states just two years before this piece was struck.
