Beschrijving voorzijde Crowned four-fold quartered arms of Mainz and Ingelheim, surmounted by an electoral hat, flanked by a crozier and sword issuing from above, with palm branches to either side. The initials AF-EM appear in the upper field, denoting Anselm Francis, Elector of Mainz. The shield is rendered in a baroque heraldic style typical of late seventeenth-century German ecclesiastical coinage. The entire composition is set within a plain field with an irregular flan edge characteristic of hammered production.

Beschrijving keerzijde A large imperial orb bearing the numeral 3, indicating the denomination of three Pfennig, divides the date to left and right. The entire device is enclosed within a circular laurel wreath tied at the base. The composition is simple and centrally arranged, consistent with small-denomination coinage of the Holy Roman Empire in the late seventeenth century. The field is plain and unadorned beyond the wreath border.

Aanvullende informatie

Anselm Franz von Ingelheim served as Archbishop-Elector of Mainz from 1679 until his death in 1695, presiding over a diocese still absorbing the devastation of the Thirty Years' War while simultaneously navigating Louis XIV's aggressive Reunions policy along the Rhine frontier. Small silver pfennig issues of this type functioned as the workhorse of local ecclesiastical commerce — the Archbishopric of Mainz maintained its own mint rights as an imperial estate, and these fractional pieces reflect that jealously guarded privilege more than any economic necessity.
