Obverse description A crowned rampant lion facing left, set within an ornate foliate border that frames the entire field. The lion, emblem of the County of Bentheim-Tecklenburg-Rheda, is rendered in a bold if somewhat crude style characteristic of early seventeenth-century German provincial coinage. The crown above the lion's head is distinctly rendered, and scrolling vine-like decorative elements surround the central charge. A partial legend reading REDE appears within or along the border, referencing the Rheda lordship.
