Soest had been a Hanseatic powerhouse in the medieval period, but by the early eighteenth century the city's autonomous minting rights were a bureaucratic remnant rather than a commercial necessity. These small copper issues served hyper-local exchange in a region where Prussian monetary authority was steadily encroaching on the prerogatives of lesser issuing bodies. Soest lost its independent coinage rights not long after this series ended.
