Wiedenbrück's copper pfennig issues of 1619 fall squarely within the catastrophic monetary environment of the Kipper- und Wipperzeit — the "clipping and see-sawing" crisis that swept the Holy Roman Empire from roughly 1618 onward, driven by princes and municipalities systematically debasing coinage to profit from arbitrage between face value and metal content. Small civic copper issues like this one often emerged precisely because larger silver denominations had become so unreliable that local authorities stepped in with low-denomination emergency coinage to keep daily commerce functional.
