Additional information

Cuba's 1990 platinum issues were produced for the international numismatic export market, a hard-currency revenue stream the Castro government used deliberately during the "Special Period" triggered by the collapse of Soviet subsidies. Trial pieces from this program — reverse strikes on blank planchets or uniface tests — were never intended to leave the mint in collector hands, making their appearance in the market a matter of some speculation about provenance.
