| Obverse description | Left-facing portrait bust of Ernesto 'Che' Guevara occupying the central field, rendered in bold relief. The curved legend PATRIA O MUERTE arcs along the upper periphery, with the date 1990 placed in the exergue below the portrait. A continuous row of beads forms an inner border closely following the rim, framing the design throughout. |

Cuba's 1990 platinum issues were produced for the international numismatic export market, a hard-currency revenue stream the Castro government used deliberately during the "Special Period" triggered by the collapse of Soviet subsidies. Trial pieces from this program — reverse strikes on blank planchets or uniface tests — were never intended to leave the mint in collector hands, making their appearance in the market a matter of some speculation about provenance.
