The Ternate island series is part of Indonesia's broader regional coinage program celebrating the outer archipelago, but Ternate carries specific weight: it was the epicenter of the sixteenth-century spice trade wars, the prize over which Portugal, Spain, and the Netherlands fought with extraordinary violence. The VOC effectively controlled the island's clove monopoly by the 1650s, enforcing it through the systematic destruction of clove trees on rival islands.
The denomination in Pesos is an anachronism — Ternate used Spanish pesos during the brief Iberian period before Dutch displacement.
