Cuba's Foreign Exchange Certificates were a two-tier currency system introduced to capture hard currency from tourists and diplomats while keeping it separate from the peso economy accessible to ordinary Cubans. The "D" series, distinguished by a round overprint, was specifically intended for use by Cuban nationals who received remittances from abroad — a politically awkward admission that dollars were flowing in from the exile community in Miami.
Státní Tiskárna Cenin, the Czechoslovak state security printer, handled much of Cuba's banknote production throughout the 1980s, a straightforward consequence of COMECON trade arrangements.
