The 1 Corps Troops Supply Column operated as a logistical unit supporting Australian army formations during the Second World War, and canteen tokens of this kind — scrip issued for use within a specific camp's wet or dry canteen — were a common workaround for the chronic small-change shortage that plagued military establishments in Australia during the early 1940s. Narellan, southwest of Sydney, served as a significant staging and training camp throughout the war.
Unit-issued scrip had no standing outside the issuing canteen, which kept it from bleeding into civilian commerce. Whether this particular piece circulated heavily or survived largely unused depends almost entirely on when the unit rotated out.
