South Africa's pre-Union coinage had been struck in London, but the establishment of the Pretoria Mint in 1923 marked the first time the country produced its own currency domestically. These threepences were among the early issues from that facility, struck under an arrangement where the Royal Mint supplied technical staff and supervision during the transition to full local control. The bilingual legend — reflecting the constitutional compromise between English and Afrikaans speakers following the bitter divisions of the Anglo-Boer War — was a deliberate political accommodation, not a design convention.
