| Reverse description | A crowned Tudor portcullis with side chains occupies the centre of the reverse, a design historically associated with the Palace of Westminster and used on the threepence denomination. The Imperial Crown appears above the portcullis, while the denomination 'THREE PENCE' is divided on either side of the central device. The engraver's initials 'W G' appear to the left of the portcullis, and the date '1953' is placed in the lower field beneath the design. |

| Additional information |
The 1953 threepence carries the 'BRITT:OMN' abbreviation — a contraction of 'Britanniarum Omnium Regina,' meaning Queen of All the Britains — that was dropped from all British coinage the following year as the last vestiges of formal imperial titulature were quietly retired. This was the only year Elizabeth II's first portrait appeared alongside that legend, making 1953 a one-year transitional type by default rather than design.
