Obverse description Youthful laureate effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, her hair swept up and secured with a ribbon, a sprig of laurel adorning the coiffure, modelled in low relief in the style of Mary Gillick. The truncation of the bare shoulders is visible at the lower field. The legend '+ QUEEN · ELIZABETH · THE · SECOND' curves around the periphery, with a beaded border encircling the entire obverse.

Reverse description A centrally placed Flame Lily (Gloriosa superba), the national flower of Rhodesia, rendered in fine relief by engraver Paul Vincze, its stem bisecting the date '19 55' which flanks the flower at centre. The legend 'RHODESIA AND NYASALAND' arches above, while the denomination 'THREE PENCE' curves along the lower periphery. The engraver's initials 'P.V.' appear on the reverse. A beaded border frames the design.
