Obverse description First portrait effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the George IV State Diadem, with hair elaborately dressed and a pearl necklace visible at the truncation, as sculpted by Cecil Thomas. The legend QUEEN ELIZABETH THE SECOND runs around the periphery in Latin script. The truncation of the bust is cleanly rendered, and the portrait conveys a refined, formal regal character appropriate to early Commonwealth coinage.

Reverse description A naturalistic rendering of a cotton plant (Gossypium) occupies the central field, depicting a mature cotton boll, two additional developing bolls, open flowers, and foliage on an elegantly curved stem, engraved by Paul Vincze and signed with his initials P.V. in the lower field. The legend FEDERATION OF NIGERIA arcs across the upper periphery with the date 1959 below it, while THREE PENCE curves along the lower periphery. Two six-pointed star ornaments flank the lower legend as decorative separators.
