| Aanvullende informatie |
South Africa's threepence occupied an awkward position in the decimal transition debates of the 1950s, ultimately becoming one of the casualties of the 1961 decimalization that replaced the pound-shilling system with the rand. The .500 silver content was itself a post-war compromise — pre-1952 issues ran at .800 fine, cut down as the Treasury managed silver reserves against rising metal prices.
The 1953 issue marks the first South African coinage bearing Gillick's first Elizabethan portrait, introduced across Commonwealth mints following the coronation.
