Obverse description Central shield of quartered arms — England (three lions passant guardant) and France (fleurs-de-lis) in the first and fourth quarters, with the Irish harp in the second and third — displayed within a beaded inner circle. A mintmark appears at the top of the inner circle, varying by issue. The Latin royal legend encircles the shield between the beaded inner circle and the irregular hammered outer rim, reading clockwise from the mintmark.
