Obverse description Plain field bearing four large Chinese characters arranged in a two-by-two grid, reading 光緒銀圓 (Guangxu Silver Coin) in the centre, flanked by 叁 (Three) to the upper right and 錢 (Qian) to the lower left, denoting the denomination. The legends are rendered in bold, incuse-style raised strokes with a somewhat archaic calligraphic quality. The coin is encircled by a border of fine reeding or beading, clearly visible around the entire periphery. The flat, unadorned field imparts a stark, utilitarian character typical of late Qing provincial coinage from Xinjiang.
