| Obverse description | Central device depicts a highly detailed honey bee rendered in fine relief, set against a background of hexagonal honeycomb cells filling the inner field. Four additional bees are shown in flight around the periphery, nestled within the scalloped contours of the coin's eight-lobed border. The country name MALTA arcs along the upper portion of the field in widely spaced capital letters, while the date 1982 is inscribed along the lower field. A fine milled band frames the design just within the scalloped edge, accentuating the naturalistic engraving style characteristic of Christopher Ironside's work. |
