| Beschrijving voorzijde | White enamelled field bearing the large numeral '3' at centre, incorporating the central perforation within the curve of the digit. The legend 'Thale a/Harz' arcs across the upper field and 'Mark' appears along the lower periphery, all rendered in bold Latin lettering. Two six-pointed star ornaments flank the lower portion of the field, serving as decorative separators. The design is executed in a simple, graphic style typical of German Notgeld emergency coinage of the early Weimar period. |

Thale am Harz issued notgeld during the early 1920s postwar economic crisis, when municipal authorities across Germany were authorized to produce emergency coinage to compensate for severe coin shortages caused by metal hoarding and the collapse of prewar monetary norms. The enamelled iron construction places this piece firmly in the more elaborate — and frankly more collectible — tier of German municipal notgeld, produced for both genuine circulation needs and, increasingly, a speculator market that municipalities exploited deliberately to generate revenue.
The enamel finish on iron notgeld is notoriously vulnerable to chipping, making fully intact examples genuinely difficult to source.
