Bavaria's 1911 pattern coinage for Luitpold's 90th birthday presents a particular irony: the Prince Regent died in December of that same year, never having assumed the throne he administered for nearly three decades. The coin bears Otto's name because Otto I, declared insane in 1875, remained the nominal king throughout Luitpold's regency — a constitutional fiction Bavaria maintained for 26 years. Luitpold governed with considerable popular affection despite holding no formal royal title.
Schaaf 49/G1 designates this as a pattern variant, meaning it never entered circulation. How many were struck is not reliably documented.
