Helmstedt's officer prisoner-of-war camp was one of several German facilities that issued internal scrip during the First World War to control and account for money circulating among captive officers, who under the Hague Convention retained certain privileges — including the right to receive pay. Camp scrip prevented hard currency from funding escape attempts or reaching German civilians through barter.
The red paper stock is characteristic of the Helmstedt series, with different denominations distinguished by color rather than format. Campbell 3106 is the 3 Mark value within that sequence.
