| Obverse description | Right-facing bust of Frederick the Wise (Friedrich der Weise), Elector of Saxony, depicted in high relief with a broad flat cap and a voluminous fur-trimmed robe, rendered in a style inspired by Renaissance portraiture. The Saxon coat of arms appears at the base of the bust, flanked by the commemorative dates 1517 and 1917, marking the 400th anniversary of the Reformation. A beaded inner border frames the central design, outside of which runs the arc legend EIN FESTE BVRG IST VNSER GOTT, a reference to Martin Luther's famous hymn. The name FRIEDRICH appears to the left of the bust and DER WEISE to the right, identifying the depicted personage within the field. |
