附加信息

Ernest Louis, Grand Duke of Hesse, was one of the more artistically minded German rulers of the Wilhelmine period — a patron who pushed for reformed coinage designs under the influence of the Darmstadt artists' colony he founded in 1899. Pattern issues from Hesse-Darmstadt in this period reflect that institutional friction between the Duke's aesthetic ambitions and the conservative approval process of the Imperial German monetary authorities in Berlin, who held final say over any circulating coinage design.

Schaaf 76/G1 places this among the documented pattern submissions that never cleared imperial approval.
