Obverse description Bare-headed left-facing portrait bust of Grand Duke Ernest Louis of Hesse, rendered in high relief in a restrained Art Nouveau style by engraver Rudolf Bosselt. A sprig of laurel or olive emerges from behind the truncation at lower right. The portrait is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with the circumferential legend reading ERNST. LUDWIG. GROSS HERZOG. VON. HESSEN. flanking the effigy. The jubilee dates *1892*1917* appear below the bust, and the Berlin mint mark 'A' is positioned at the very base of the inner field.
