Frederik II issued this coin in the opening years of the Northern Seven Years' War, the protracted conflict with Sweden that began in 1563 and consumed Danish finances for the better part of a decade. The 3 Mark denomination was part of a broader effort to align Danish coinage with the larger thaler-based system circulating across northern Europe, a practical concession to cross-border trade that the Copenhagen mint formalized through the 1560s.
Davenport EC I#8228 is among the scarcer early entries in that catalog. Surviving examples in problem-free condition are genuinely difficult to source.
