At centre, a large oval vignette bearing the denomination '3 Mark' in Gothic blackletter script set against a crosshatched guilloche ground, enclosed by a wreath of oak leaves and acorns tied with a pink ribbon bow at the base. Industrial tools — a spindle at left and a textile frame at right — flank the central vignette as symbolic references to Gronau's textile industry, with a gear wheel at lower centre. In the lower-left corner the inscription 'Gronau i/W. die Spinnerstadt' appears, and at lower right the mark 'HOHE ECKE' is printed in bold block lettering. Gronau's 3 Mark notgeld from 1922 sits at the tail end of the municipal emergency money period, issued as Germany's hyperinflation was accelerating beyond any orderly control. At 40 × 30 mm, this is among the smallest paper notgeld produced — not a quirk of design, but almost certainly a paper-economy measure, as printers were rationing stock under severe supply pressure.
Edler & Krische of Hannover were prolific notgeld contractors, producing small-denomination issues for dozens of Westphalian municipalities simultaneously. By 1922, such notes were often obsolete within weeks of issue.
