Blomberg's municipal savings and loan office — the Städtische Spar- und Leihekasse — issued this note during the early Weimar inflation spiral, when hundreds of small German towns were forced to print their own emergency currency simply to keep local commerce functioning. The Reichsbank could not supply small-denomination coin and note fast enough, and the gap was filled by exactly this kind of Notgeld.
Gustav Heynke, Kanne und Kühne operated out of nearby Detmold and handled a number of Lippe-region municipal issues in this period. Thelemann's design credit is unusual enough to be worth noting — most small-town Notgeld went to press without any named designer at all.
