Obverse description Half-length frontal effigy of Charlemagne, depicted in imperial regalia, holding a scepter in his right hand and the imperial orb in his left. The last two digits of the date are separated on either side of the figure, and the arms of the city of Aachen appear at the base. The legend encircles the effigy within the border.
