The Compagnie des Indes had already lost its trade monopoly by 1769 and was formally dissolved in 1794, which means surviving examples of this note predate the company's collapse by decades — issued during a period when the Company still controlled French commerce with India, China, and the East African coast, though its finances were perpetually strained by overextension and speculative debt.
The Compagnie's paper issues from this period are rarely encountered. Most circulated within a closed administrative and commercial network rather than in general public use, which limited their production runs and makes survivorship thin.
