Frederik V acceded to the Danish throne in August 1746 following the death of his father Christian VI, and this commemorative issue was struck specifically to mark that transition — not as circulating currency, but as a presentation piece distributed within court and diplomatic circles. The Dav EC III listing places it firmly within the tradition of Scandinavian accession commemoratives, a format Danish mints had employed since the seventeenth century to announce new reigns to foreign powers as much as to domestic subjects.
At nearly 45 grams of near-pure silver, these were expensive to produce and issued in limited numbers. Surviving pieces in problem-free condition are infrequent on the market.
