Württemberg's small-denomination billon coinage of this period occupied an awkward monetary position — too debased to be treated as true silver, yet issued under the conventions of the old South German gulden system that the Zollverein was already beginning to pressure into obsolescence. The Munich Coinage Treaty of 1837 had nominally standardized South German currency, but member states retained wide latitude over minor fractional types, and Württemberg exercised it.
William I died in 1864, and his successor Charles replaced the gulden-based system entirely when Germany's monetary unification accelerated in the early 1870s, making this issue genuinely terminal — no successor 3-kreuzer type was ever struck for Württemberg.
