| Obverse description | Armored and draped bust of Emperor Rudolf II facing right, wearing a prominent ruffled collar, with laureate head and naturalistic portraiture in the late Renaissance style. The effigy is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The Latin legend, beginning at approximately 6 o'clock, reads RVDOL II D G R IM S AV G H B REX, denoting his full imperial and royal titles. The legend is rendered in Roman capitals and runs continuously around the periphery of the coin. |

| Additional information |
Rudolf II moved his imperial court from Vienna to Prague in 1583, yet Austrian minting operations continued in his name across multiple facilities. The Vienna output of these small silver pieces spans a politically turbulent stretch — Rudolf's increasingly erratic rule culminated in his forced abdication of the Austrian archduchy to his brother Matthias in 1608, two years before this type ceased production.
KM#17 encompasses significant die variation across its twenty-plus year run, and attributing individual pieces to specific years requires close attention to mintmaster marks.
