Rudolf II spent much of his reign at Prague rather than Vienna, increasingly withdrawing from government into his collections of art and curiosities — yet the Hall mint in Tyrol continued striking in his name throughout this period of imperial dysfunction. By 1605, Rudolf was locked in open conflict with his brother Matthias, who was quietly assembling support among the Austrian estates to strip Rudolf of his territories, a process that would culminate in the Brothers' Quarrel of 1606–1611.
Hall's mint had operated continuously since the 1470s and was among the most technically capable in the Habsburg lands, having pioneered roller-press coinage decades earlier.
