Montfort-Peggau was among the smallest and most financially precarious of the Austrian imperial counties, and its coinage was essentially a fiscal stopgap. Maximilian Joseph Ernest's authority to strike was technically derived from imperial privilege, but the practical motivation was the chronic shortage of small silver in the Vorarlberg and surrounding territories during the 1740s.
Ebner's documentation of this type notes considerable variation across the four-year run, suggesting multiple working dies were cut without strict adherence to a single master — not unusual for a minor county operating without a permanent mint facility.
