Maria Theresia issued these small billon pieces during the co-regency period following the death of her husband Francis I in 1765, when her son Joseph II nominally shared power — an arrangement she largely dominated until her own death in 1780. The dates on this series span exactly that co-regency window, and production was spread across multiple Austrian mints, which accounts for the range of Her# varieties and the inconsistency in silver content collectors sometimes observe across examples.
The .350 fineness placed these firmly in the debased end of Austrian small change, a deliberate policy to keep low-denomination coins in circulation rather than hoarded or melted.
