Obverse description Central field displays the crowned arms of Hesse-Darmstadt: a shield bearing a rampant lion on a horizontally lined field, surmounted by an elaborate grand ducal crown with cross finial and pearl ornamentation. The shield is set within a plain field with a beaded inner border. The circular legend GROSSHERZOGTHUM HESSEN runs along the upper periphery in raised Latin capitals.
