Leopold V ruled Tyrol as a separate Habsburg appanage from 1619, the same year he resigned his ecclesiastical offices — he had been Bishop of Passau and Strasbourg — to marry Claudia de' Medici and produce an heir. The 3 Kreuzer was the workhorse small silver of the Tirolean economy during this period, circulating heavily across the Alpine passes where it served toll and trade functions daily. These pieces wore fast.
