Johann Anton von Waldstein held Krummau (Český Krumlov) during the immediate aftermath of the Thirty Years' War, a period when the Bohemian nobility's minting rights were simultaneously jealously exercised and politically precarious. The Waldstein family had risen dramatically — and controversially — through the war years, with Albrecht von Wallenstein's assassination in 1634 casting a long shadow over the dynasty's imperial standing. Local coinage from these transitional years was partly a reassertion of seigneurial privilege at a moment when Habsburg centralization was tightening its grip on Bohemian autonomous rights.
KM#19 is a scarce type with limited surviving examples attributable to the short three-year window of issue.
