Frederick I assumed the title of King of Württemberg in 1806 under Napoleon's reorganization of German territories through the Confederation of the Rhine, which dissolved the old duchy and granted him a vastly expanded realm. The small billon issues of this period were a practical necessity — Württemberg's monetary system was in transition, absorbing formerly independent territories with their own coinage traditions while simultaneously aligning with Napoleonic monetary reforms.
