Franz von Dietrichstein became Bishop of Olomouc in 1599 through direct papal appointment — bypassing the cathedral chapter entirely — and spent the following decades as one of the most powerful Counter-Reformation figures in Moravia. His episcopate coincided almost exactly with the opening crisis of the Thirty Years' War; coinage from the 1614–1619 window predates the Battle of White Mountain but falls squarely within the confessional tensions that made Bohemia ungovernable. Dietrichstein used his secular authority aggressively, and the mint at Olomouc operated as an expression of that jurisdictional reach.
