Joachim Frederick of Liegnitz died in February 1602, and this issue belongs to a class of commemorative Silesian coinage produced specifically to mark the deaths of ruling princes — a practice the Piast dukes of Liegnitz-Brieg maintained with some consistency through the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The duchy itself was among the last Piast-held territories in Silesia, a line that would end entirely with Georg Wilhelm in 1675, after which the lands reverted to the Habsburgs.
The Fürstenberg-Schlossberg reference places this among a well-documented but genuinely scarce subset of Silesian minor coinage.
