Charles Philip of Greiffenklau-Vollraths died in February 1754 after a tenure as Prince-Bishop of Würzburg that lasted barely four years. Memorial coinages of this type were a routine obligation of the prince-bishopric system — each episcopal death and succession generated its own small issues, partly ceremonial, partly administrative, marking the interregnum before the cathedral chapter elected a successor. Würzburg went through several such transitions in the mid-eighteenth century, and the accumulated death and accession pieces form a tight documentary record of the see's turnover.
