Charles II of Baden was a minor figure caught in a turbulent transition — he ruled from 1811 until his death in 1818, the duchy having been elevated to grand duchy status under Napoleon's reorganization of German territories in 1806. These small billon pieces were struck through the Congress of Vienna period, when Baden's political survival depended entirely on the goodwill of the Allied powers reassembling Europe around it.
The .313 fineness places this squarely in the debased subsidiary coinage common to the Rhenish Confederation states, where silver content had been quietly eroded during the wars.
