Charles II ruled Inner Austria — Styria, Carinthia, and Carniola — as a separate Habsburg hereditary domain, distinct from the imperial title held by his brother Maximilian II and later Rudolf II. His reign coincided with intense Counter-Reformation pressure; Charles was among the most aggressively Catholic of the Habsburg archdukes, expelling Protestant preachers from Graz in 1578 and establishing the Jesuit-run university there the same year. The 1583 coinage falls squarely within this period of confessional consolidation.
