Ferdinand of Inner Austria — later Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II — issued these kreuzers from the Klagenfurt mint during a period when his aggressive Counter-Reformation campaign was systematically dismantling Protestant institutions across Styria, Carinthia, and Carniola. Protestant burghers expelled from Graz and Klagenfurt in 1600 lost property, businesses, and access to the very currency their taxes had helped mint. The Klagenfurt facility was one of several Inner Austrian mints Ferdinand inherited from his father Archduke Karl II in 1590.
