Wallenstein acquired the Duchy of Sagan in 1628 as partial compensation from Emperor Ferdinand II, who had stripped the duchy from its previous holders following the Edict of Restitution. The right to strike coin came with the territory. Wallenstein exercised that right almost immediately, producing coinage from 1629 through 1631 — years that coincided exactly with his first period of imperial generalship before his abrupt dismissal in August 1630.

His reinstatement the following year, forced by the Swedish invasion under Gustavus Adolphus, cut the minting period short in a different way. By 1632 Wallenstein's attentions were entirely military, and the Sagan mint's output reflects that disruption.
