Nassau's 3 Kreuzer issues of this period reflect the duchy's position within the German monetary conventions of the early nineteenth century, specifically the agreements that standardized small billon coinage across the southwestern German states. Duke Adolph — who would later become Grand Duke of Luxembourg in 1890 after the Nassau male line extinguished in the German territories — presided over a duchy that was absorbed into Prussia following his support for Austria in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. These coins effectively ceased to be legal tender almost immediately after annexation.
