Further Austria — Vorderösterreich — was the collective name for the Habsburg dynasty's scattered territorial holdings in southwestern Germany and the upper Rhine, administratively distinct from the Austrian hereditary lands and governed from Freiburg im Breisgau. These territories were ceded to France under the Treaty of Lunéville in 1801, which ended their existence as a functioning administrative unit and terminated coinage production. The 1793 start date aligns precisely with the outbreak of war with Revolutionary France, when maintaining a functional small-denomination currency in the region carried genuine logistical urgency.
